Sounds like a blown head gasket or worse case scenario cracked head...engines tend to blow a head gasket when overheated but, don't just replace the head gasket you need to have the head checked for cracks & flatness or you could end up in the same boat again (pun intended) ...pull the heads and send them out for rebuild and/or just checked "if your valves look good" then just have them checked, check your cylinder walls for damage after you pull the heads. Sounds like you got off easy, little out of pocket but time consuming.
If the cylinders walls look good then get the heads down to any automotive/ machine shop that does heads... slap them back on your engine and you should be boating by next week : )
PS> I would pull just the one head off the side that has water in cylinder & look at what kind of shape it's in "valves seats good & their clean" then have a shop check it for cracks & flatness, if the shop recommends you have the head rebuilt then pull the other one and do both sides...concentrate on the single head maybe you can get away with just replacing the one side w/ blown head gasket!
