What transmission fluid to use: 1985 Commander 337, 7.4L In-line in-board drive

The manual states the following:

“Use only automatic transmission fluid (ATF).  All automatic transmissions fluids currently used in passenger cars are suitable for use in transmission.“

So, what fluids were they using in 1985 ?
One guy on K dock told me use type A.
The marina sold me Dexron III (3).

Thanks

1985 Commander 337; 7.4L; In-line in-board drive

Pancho CC,

Generally speaking, Dextron III is the one to use. Borg Warner and Paragon Gear specify it.

You can also confirm this at:

best, Diver

Hi Pancho,

diveryates speaks the truth.  On many of the older models there was a spec for a fluid that is no longer available, but the Dex III is backwards compatible with most (or all) of these.

regards,

P
