Has anyone experienced gas tank corrosion in their boat leading to holes, and leaking gasoline into the buildge?

We have, and recently learned that on the 1999 Signature 300, the gas tank is designed to actually sit too far into the buildge, thus causing tank corrosion along the bottom of the tank. The buildge pump works fine, but the tank is placed too far below the water line of the buildge.

Needless to say it's a VERY dangerous situation. If you have this year and model, please be careful. We are lucky we didn't blow-up!

We are having to have the gas tank completely remade and reconfigured so it will no longer hang under the buildge water line.

What on Earth was Chaparrel thinking?

Kathie,

You should be able to find what you need in the Chaparral Owners Forum.  They have some very knowledgeable members.  http://forum.chaparralboats.com/index.php?showforum=7
