help!

I read you guys all the time and you guys are great! I have been a member for awhile now, I own a 1983 Catalina 280. I think this is only the 2nd time i have written in becaise you guys are far more mechanically inclined then I will ever be, I'm pretty good at putting the key in the ignition, beyond that, well that's about as far as it goes. Awhile back there was some talk about the Thetford Head, the model that was discussed was the same as I have. I have been unable to locate a manual and we are experiencing some foul order issues this season. I would love to know how it works and what i may be doing wrong. Any help would be greatly appreciated, my wife says she will only hold her nose so long.

Eric,

I also HAD an aroma issue that the admiral as well as neighboring sailboaters found objectionable.  Didn't blame them however - it was bad, especially when the head was flushed.

Not sure it is the same head as yours but here is how it was fixed:
1) Added a second vent connection to the tank that would allow air flow in and out of the tank through the vent system.  This air flow allows the tank to operate aerobic (no smells) instead of anaerobic (bad smelling). Used water intake strainers (scoops) to direct air flow into and out of the tank.
2) Rebuilt the head internals - replacing the joker valve and all seals.

That was two years ago and so far the infrequent pump-outs have been easy and
the smell has remained gone during use as well as periods of inactivity.

Hope you can solve yours as easily.
