Hello all, I am thinking about converting my steering from cable to hydraulic on my 1988 Daytona 300 twin 5.7 mercruiser alpha 1 gen2 set up.

I have to replace the cable system anyway as it has not had very good servicing prior to my ownership and it is very tight and at one point will just seize up on me, the parts for the conversion will cost me approx $800-1000 more.

So, I am looking for anyone that may have any information on this subject and or has first hand experiance on the conversion.

Any info would be appreciated.

Dave

i have considered the same swap but really cant give any useful info about it. i was looking at the racer style rams that bolt onto the outside transom and to the drives. drives are connected together via a bar. less movement, more secure design. however:

the tube at the very end of the cable (right behind the engine) (bolts to the inner transom assy.) gets siezed up on mine...

i usually dismantle, clean it up, and re-assemble with much grease. works like new for long time!
