Topic: Cruisers 3170 Side Exhaust

It has side exhaust and I have on 2 separate occasions had a problem with water pushing up through the exhaust into the cylinders. The first time was understandable. I dropped anchor and the boat swung into a swell from a large boat and water came most of the way up the side. I was able to just replace the plugs and dry things out and the boat has run well since. This weekend I had the same thing happen but I was under power. Moving at about 17 mph. I made a turn to port and to starboard and the port engine quit. When I opened the hatch there was 15 or 20 gallons of water in the hatch and splashed up on the port engine cover. After the bilge pump emptied it out I removed the plugs dried them, spun the engine to dry it out, sprayed some 656 into the cylinders replaced the plugs and she started right up. I headed home. More stuff happened but my main question is has anyone had a problem with water coming in the exhaust this way? Are there exhaust flaps that can be used on side exhaust boats? The water in the hatch is a complete mystery.
