Well folks my new (old) Thompson is being delivered this Saturday! I spent a few hours on her today just getting to know her a bit. I love this boat!
So being April Fools Day, I decided to play a little joke on my wife.... and the story goes...
I told my wife the boat was being delivered today at 9:00 am. I called her 3 times and text messaged her to call me ASAP. When she finally called me I told her that the boat fell off the boat stands and put a 10 foot crack along the hull and the boat was done for! Mind you - she is a first grade teacher and speaking to me in her class. Also remember the boat isn't actually being delivered until this Saturday.
She freaked out. I told her that we didn't have insurance on the boat yet and since the boat was already on the stands which we got with the purchase of the boat that the transport company was not at fault. Basically we were stuck with a 30 foot boat in our backyard laying on it's side with a huge split down her. Of course I kept it going all day. "I spoke with the previous owner and he started to cry." "The cops said we were screwed b/c of no insurance." on and on for about 5 hours until the delivery guy came to her school with a dozed red roses and a card that read...
April Fools! The boat is fine! Love You.
She was just a little pissed at me when she called me but the creams and laughter from her students was priceless!!!!!
Happy April Fools!

Hey Don. Yeah I know! I usually play it safe with small jokes but hey, its all good. She got a kick out of it and at the end of the day she was very thankful to hear the boat was fine.
She comes home in a couple of days. I will be posting pictures and updates on this thread as I go along.
BTW - We are re-naming her to NO GIN

Today I made the new driveway for NO GIN. After removing a section of the fence I spent the entire day in the pouring rain taking trees down and clearing brush. I had 10 yards of RCA (crushed stone) delivered in 2 trucks which both got stuck in the mud! I spread all the RCA out and the drive looks nice. Problem is it's like a swamp so I just called the transporter and moved the delivery to Sunday in hopes the driveway will dry out.

yeah. Well, we are keeping her at the mooring all season so we will only use them to launch and remove her. Then we will store her in our backyard on the driveway we built and hopefully buy one of those 40x12 portable type garages to keep her in the off season.

that'd be a relitively easy boat to trailer.

Really? It seems really big to me to have to trailer. Besides, it's only like $400 a season to keep it moored in the harbor. I have a 15' speed boat to trailer as our tender to get to the mooring so we can have fun getting to her!

sounds fun...
when this forum first opened up, it seemed to really draw attention---everyone checked in quite often....who knows, maybe all these guys sold their boats! ???
i've had mine for about 6 years--and trying to find people or info about them was next to impossible. SO, this is really nice for me. just to meet ANYONE ELSE who has one or knows anything about them. need to turn it into a club of some sort,,,?
when you mention "Thompson"....people think of the trawler company usually.
nice boats but not Thompson Boat Company..
anyway-- when are you going to dunk it??

She is being delivered tomorrow to my house. I am going to do some minor work (tune up, oil, hoses etc.) and change the paint scheme and interior. Then I hope to have her in the drink May 2nd!
I am definitely into forming some sort of club if you are! I was hoping I can meet up with some other Thompson owners in the water this summer and do some fun stuff.

oh by the way--we trailer ours now. about 15,000 lbs all together. and an 11 foot beam.....piece of cake!
they rot to fast in the water. we decided it creates so much more maintanance and upkeep. and you gotta worry about it much more when you can't be there.
i'm usually gone 2-3, sometimes 4 weeks at a time. between storms, leaks, stray current, bottom growth etc..etc..etc...
we got rid of the slip and decided to do transient slips when and where we want.
i came home once to a pretty bad leak caused by stray current. it rotted a hole in one of the Y-pipes. luckily the batteries, pumps, etc all kept up and kept her ONTOP of the water.(that's actually how this entire project got started)
so i only keep her in the water when i can keep a closer eye out.

That's food for thought for sure. My season is very short. 3 maybe 4 months at best so I figure on being on her just about every day even if it just means having dinner on her. This is my first season and first boat so I guess I'll just see how it goes.

hi guys.
I have a hard time on the boating site in the winter, but now that theres a few more Thompson owners out there, I have a reason to be more frequent.
i have the 26 carrara and really looked at keeping it on the trailer, but I have a full power slip for $1k a season.
beats hauling.

Don that is really cheap! They want $92/ft at my local town docks and there is an 8-10 year wait! I will be on the forum rather frequently as I my boat is arriving tomorrow and you can bet I will be doing a ton to her. It would be great to be able to turn to fellow Thompson owners for some guidance and advice.

Well I started to tear apart the dash panel to remove the clear plexi and crappy decal behind it. Anyone have any idea how to get the steering wheel off? I removed the cover and hex nut but can't pull it off.

I decided to go with the old fashioned way and muscle it off.
I removed many of the gauges and will start building a new dash in the next day or so. Any suggestions as to what material to use for the dash? I am thinking of using the current fiberglass panel but covering it in carbon fiber.

is that panel a one piece z-shape? if so, you could try and have it stripped and have a nice mat-finish put on.

Yeah. It's a one piece shaped like a Z. I am removing it and stripping it. I was thinking of wrapping it with carbon fiber or a wood look vinyl.

if its aluminum, you could flapper wheel it or circle burnish then have it anodized. that way you don't add weight, the paint can't chip, and you see the nice metal finish.

same questions i'm struggling with right now-
i am experimenting with lexan right now---bends easy with heat gun--and when you paint the back side it really looks sharp. do some googling before you work with it though (proper heat..etc..) trying differant paints to get special effects.
been thinking about somehow painting "THOMPSON" from the back side. and then cuttin holes through it....
i too was going to try carbon fiber--but i decided to totally rebuild--went bigger-going with bigger gauges,,,and more of them. so the idea of trying to pretty-up the old panel was quickly tossed.
we are shopping for gauges as we speak. i like the big five inchers. almost had a nice set but "schnost"
hey joe.....ya can't put that thing together with the old gauges either!
at least i couldn't make myself do it...it was all old and crusty/green on the back side terminals and connections ....of course that led to rewiring the rats nest that thompson puts in there...
(now it starts.) at least i'm not the only one with the diease!

Yeah. We actually went out yesterday shopping for gauges! I really want some new gauges that stand out and that are different then the normal white or black face. Considering the Sahara or Silver face gauges. Also going back and forth between the 4-in-1 gauges to eliminate some clutter. If I can find some gauges at reasonable prices I will certainly go bigger. These damn things are expensive!!
