I am in the process of shopping for my first boat. I found a 1974 34 Silverton about 2 hours north of where I live. The owner doesn't have any pictures of her so I am not sure what she looks like or even what the features are. Can you guys help by telling me what to look for in a Silverton of this vintage and size? Also, if you have this boat come pics would be awesome!
Thanks.

Hi. I have a 1986 34C which I love. Have you tried yachtworld.com to find other boats that year so you can see pictures of it? You may think of joining the Silverton Owner's Club as a "wannabee" so you can get information from people that have that model. Good luck with you search!

Joined the group and paid for the year. Great guys on there willing to help! I am going to see the 77 34' Silverton Convertible tomorrow. I hope it's everything the owner is telling me or I will be pretty upset. Not a huge trip, but a good 5 hours in the car there and back. He is injured and cant get any pictures? Hummm. Worth it to drive and check her out anyway.
Any suggestions in what to pay special attention to in the initial inspection? I will be sure to take many hi res pics to share here! If I like it I will bring my surveyor with me to do a full survey in the next few days to follow.

I know it can be exciting to look for your next boat but just use common sense. Open cabinets and hatches and peek inside and see what you can see. Make sure to take a bright flashlight and a good camera. When I was looking for my boat I can't tell you how many batteries and rolls (yes back then we used film) I used. Seems every time I got home I couldn't remember what this looked like or what did it have so I would just look at the pictures. I took pics from different angles, just general shots etc. You will be surprised how much you will see from them. Don't be afraid to ask the owner any questions that come up. If they don't want to answer them let that be a warning sign. Also, most importantly, if you decide you want this boat.......spend the money and have a good survey completed by a reputable surveyor. I guarantee the bank (if you finance) and the insurance company will require this. You may as well have a good engine mechanic look at the engines and transmissions while you are at it. It may sound like a waste of money but I walked away from a boat that looked like it was in mint condition..........it needed about $10,000 in fiberglass work! I am also a member of the silverton club. See you on the board and keep us updated.

Hi Jeff. I actually pulled the trigger on a 1971 Chris Craft 31' Commander. It was almost to good to be true as it was in my home town port and cost me next to nothing. Very strong hull, great condition overall but in need of some engine attention.
I really wanted the Silverton and actually liked that boat better but everything just seemed to go to be true with this Chris that I couldn't pass her up.

However........ I am re-considering the Silver! I have a boat mechanic coming to inspect the Chris this morning and let me know what he thinks of it.
