trouble with the windlass. will not take in the anchor line but will still spin but not grip.

What make windlass is it?  Did it ever work?  If so, it sounds like your gypsy is worn out.  When mine slips a little, I can get it to work by using my foot to put a little pressure on the self tailing arm.
