Does anyone know if there have been problems related to the packing gland or stuffing box on older sea rays?  We have a 1984 34' sundancer which just partially sunk at the dock.  Insurance says it may be a maintenance issue since water was coming through the shaft.  The packing gland was replaced at the start of the season & periodically checked.  We have never had water in the bilges, etc. & we used the boat all summer.  Any input??

Kareno....

I have a 1990 and the glands weep briefly after a cruise....nothing major....A thought....when the new packing was put in...the packing nut may have been turned to tight and scored the shaft...once it is scored...no amount of packing will help....could have also been that way prior to putting the new packing in......might also check the rudder logs.....as that also is a source of water entry into the bilge...

Thanks for your response.  Just spoke with the insurance guy - they're denying the claim based on improper maintenance or wear and tear.  He claims that since he saw water  coming into the boat from where the shaft log is, that that must be the reason.  He never inspected the shaft log, the packing, etc.  He says that since he saw water coming in that the only reason is that it was improperly maintained or packed wrong or wore out since the beginning of the season.  He says there can be no other reason the boat took on so much water.  Now we need to appeal it - have to find a lawyer, I guess.  I just think that he can't make that decision without inspecting the part, etc.  But he disagrees.

I would before I did anything....get a second opinion on it....maybe even a third.....if you appeal...you will need them......there are just to many ways for water to get into a bilge....to decide one just one without an inspection.....

surveyor or even better an independent Marine Insurance Adjuster...don't know if a mechanic would have the necessary credentials should you end up in court
