sudden issues with port engine. ignition switch is a three position. first position off, second position, system on, third position, engages starter. all works well at this poiint. gauges ok, starter spinns, engine lights, but will die the instant you ley off the ignition from start mode. start mode momentarty position for starter motor. if i contine to hold key in start mode engine will run. really bad for starter. have replaced ignition switch. still have same issue. any thoughts would be great. thanks.  1985 searay 390. 454 gas engines

I had the same problem. Kill switch was on. Got a couple of laughs from by-standers.

Don't know how true this is for marine engines, but on an automotive engine there is a ballast resistor which, as I recall, shunts power to the starter depending on switch position. If it fails it will cause the symptoms described - the engine will start and run in the start position but not in the run position. Learned this one the hard way.

It could be that the switch is not making contact on the ignition terminal, but is still working on all other places.
