Did Uniflite have blister & Pox problems in 1984??? I am looking at a 42' double cabin and I don't want to deal the repair. Thanks your info will be appreciated

Hello Stonewall,

The simple answer is NO.  I have just such a boat; 1984, 42' Double Cabin.  The original owner claims that is was the second-to-the-last 42' built.  Anyway, she has no know "pox or blisters".  However, I am about to haul out for a bottom job and we will see if there are any of the underwater type blisters then.

One thing to remember.  This is from a friend of mine who worked for Uniflite.  Many times they would cast the hulls and set them aside while waiting to figure out what particular cabin configuration to put on the hull.  Some of these hulls would be in the shed for up to a couple years before completion.  So, your Uni could proclaim it was a 1984, but the hull may have been poured up to 2 years before that.  So saying the "pox" ended in such and such a year may be true, but the hull you actually have may be much older that that.

I have an 1981 36 Double Cabin that has cosmetic blistering (above the waterline only) and have seen 1982 models with no blistering whatsoever. My understanding is that '82 and newer did not have that problem. Funny thing though, we've had a lot of people on our boat and they did not notice the small blisters on the superstructure until I pointed them out.  Regardless, no one would refuse a cruise on a boat just because it has blisters and it allowed me to buy more boat for the money than I had originally planned to spend. Will it make a difference on resale? Possibly, but there are many people like myself who consider mechanical condition (reliability) more important. Also by the time I finish cruising with this boat it'll be the end of boating and the expense for me. I don't expect to make money from owning a boat anyway:).

We just finished a three week cruise visiting a dozen Gulf Islands and had no mechanical problems at all. It was a great experience and an inexpensive holiday especially with the no charge reciprocal moorage we got to use from our $150 dollar a year yacht club membership (small club). I really recommend joining a club. We met some fine people there.
My twin diesels used 75 US gallons or about $370 Cdn. The cost of the beer I drank hurt more.
I hope all the forum readers are having a good time this summer. Remember, it's only money and you can't take it with you.
