Wondered if anyone had any advice. I have a 87 searay seville, inboard outboard, GM 4 cylinder, 165 alpha one. I was having a hard time getting the boat to plane out, then got it figured out. It was running pretty well, then I slowed down, it wanted and did stall. It would only run for a few seconds at a time. I could give the enging more gas, rev it up alittle, and as soon as I would put it in gear it would die. We towed it in to the dock, waited a couple of hours, started it up like there was nothing wrong. We took it out again, ran it around slowly for awhile, started to give it alittle gas and it started acting like it did not want to plane or run real strong. Does anyone have an idea what to look for. I checked the closed system coolant level, oil level and the tank was full. Help please.

Thanks Tony

Tony,

A couple of things to check:

Fuel
Electrical
Compression - Hope it's not this one

Bad gas?  Water in gas?  Check for fuel going to carburator.  May need to change filters, separators or fuel pump.  Possible carb rebuild if still no fuel.

Check coil, points, rotor, cap, plug wires and plugs.  I had a problem of not getting enough power to plane.  Turned out to be a bad plug wire.  If they are all still original, they are probably due anyway.  I put a Pertronix kit on mine to replace the points.  Works well.

I would start with the simple/cheap stuff first.

The last thing is compression.  These engines had a problem with anti-freeze leaking into the exhaust manifolds and causing the rings to burn.  If you have stains on the outside of the exhaust riser where it meets the manifold, you may be leaking.  Need to use official Mercruiser gaskets here and torque properly.  Do a compression check for this one.  I had to have both engines in my 1986 rebuilt for this.  Mercruiser warranteed it.

Good luck.  Let us know how it turns out.

Bob

You may also want to check the venting system for the fuel tank. A clogged vent line can fuel starve the engine at those times you are attempting to draw larger amounts of fuel. Good luck!
