Ready to close on buying a 2005 30' cruiser with Volvo 5.0 and XDP's, 120 hrs. At the 100 hr service done at 120 hrs, they noted leaking boot, water in the upper outdrive, gimble had to be torched out and other upper internals replaced. Should I check into any other issues, like the engine? lower components?  Is this a recall issue with the boot.  Boat is in salt water but dry stored.

Hi Mac,

We have SX VP drives that have the same upper housing as the XDP.  I pull the drives each year to inspect and pull maintenance on the drives.  This usually involves greasing the universal joints, touchup of the paint, inspecting the bellows and reinstallation the following Spring.  Takes a bit of time, but gives the drives a long life.

My previous boat had VP 270 drives that required the same annual effort.  I had that boat for 15 years with no drive problems.  The I/O takes some extra effort, but the rewards of (20 to 30%) better fuel economy and 10 to 20% higher cruising speeds make it worth it.  We cruise our 32' crowne at 30 Mph and get 1.4 MPG.  A 30' should get even better fuel economy and speed.

Enjoy the summer.
