I have a 1998 330 Sundancer with 454 Mercruisers. My mechanic just replaced my alternators and discovered that my bad reading on the gauge was because of a bad isolator, which is restricting the flow of current. He said the isolator has an input from the alternator for each engine and one lead out to a battery for each engine. He wants to wire around it rather than replace it because he says it serves no obvious function, unless it's some kind of fusable link. When he bypasses the isolator, we get the voltage reading off the alternator that we expect. Can anybody tell me exactly what this isolator setup accomplishes, and would it be wise to wire around it? Thanks much.
