Hi... I'm new to this forum.

I have question regarding a purchasing a 18' 89 SeaRay for under $3k is this a good buy?

minor or major? has cracked block

Is this something I can fix my self.... mave little mechanical experience. Or is something going to be very $$

Doesnt sound like a very good deal to me. Unless you are a mechanic and can swap an engine out yourself. I just repowered my '89 220DA. I bought a Remanned Marine 350 and had my Marina do the work. I ended up with over $5000 for the job. Now, there were some mishaps along the way. Like the Marina overcharged me because it took them way too long. It would probably be a 20 hr job with the right tools. So the labor should have been around 1500-1800. I got a pretty good deal on the engine, since I worked for the engine company. I've heard you can get remanned 350s for as low as $1300.

Anyway, Swapping an engine is a pretty big job and it's not cheap if you pay someone to do it. Plus you should replace all the belts and hoses while you're at it.

For a 20 yr old 18', with a bad engine, $3k doesnt sound real good. You also might get hit for a core charge for the cracked block when you get the new engine. So add another $200.

Just my opinion. If you are just getting into boating, that kind of experience can really turn you off to the whole thing. Look for something you can have fun with after you slap down that hard earned cash.

I will just keep looking... I got till next year to get one... so I got plenty of time to look and learn everything I need to know about boats.

I'm new at buying boat...

also looking for recommendation on the boats too...

What are your favorites and brand name etc...?

My criteria are:

1. Fishing in fresh water In Colorado...

2. Cost around $3 ~ 4.5K price range

3. Maybe I will water ski later

4. 4 ~ 5 people and maybe 6?

5. 15-17' size

Searay is my favorite brand of boat, but my primary use is not fishing. I use my boat for cruising. You might want to look for a center console boat. It can be difficult to fish 4 or 5 people on a run about. I am not familiar with Colorado waters. So I dont really know how much power or what type of hull would be best.

Boats can get pretty expensive. Especially boats that are designed for a single purpose like fishing. So I guess a primary factor will be what type of boat fits your budget. Few of us started with our ultimate boat as a first boat. My strongest suggestion to you is to get a boat that is least likey to cause you problems. If your first boat needs constant repair, it will turn you off to boating not to mention the problems it will cause with your spouse.

So good luck. If you find something that you are looking at, post your questions to the board. you should get lots of help from the members here.

Take a look at www.usauctions.com There is a center consul 24 footer going at auction this week. Powered by twin 150's. No trailer but that can be fixed I am sure.
