I have a 2006 Monticello that will not plane when three or more adults
on it unless I use the trim tabs. It has a Merc 350 mag with Bravo 3
drive. Is this normal ? This is my first season with this boat, which
happen to love.

Gosh, that must be frustrating... I don't know much about that boat
with that power, but for sure it doesn't sound normal...

Mike-

I have a 2004 Monticello with the Volvo 280hp powerplant.  It is very similar to yours.

What you describe is not unusual.  My Monti, when full of gas and water, and loaded with "stuff" for our weekends and weeks on the water requires tabs to get on plane unless you want to wait a while at full throttle.  Add more than three adults and things get real slow.

When we entertain and have 6-8 adults on board it is a struggle to get up on plane with full tabs and trimmed all the way down of course.  It does it, it just takes a while.

Sure, some of this is negative, but for the way we use our boat, it is an annoyance that only occasionally comes up.

That said, if the Monti has 1/2 tank of water, 1/2 tank of gas and two adults on board, you can climb on plane quite easily.

So, you're okay.  Use 'them tabs to reduce your planing time, fuel usage and wear and tear.

My experiences...

Check other Monticello threads, including posts from me, for more info.

Brian.

Mike,

I have a 2005 Monticello and had the same problem until my dealer mechanic looked into and found the boat had the wrong size prop on it. It had a 24" pitch and they put a 19" pitch and the boat jumps up on plane now.

Rich
