Question for the group-

If you have experienced errant holding tank level readings, what have you found to be the best way to, uh, cleanse the pick-ups located inside the tank of nastiness?

I've considered spraying them hard with a hose from the access cover when the tank is empty or,

reaching in with a long handle brush and scrubbing that area in the tank.  However, I don't know how it works, so I worry about damaging any electrical contacts inside the tank.

I have a similar problem, my waste holding tank sensor must be caked with something because it always shows half or full even when just emptied.  My plan is to open the sensor access on the tank - first having the tank rinsed and emptied so it is less horrible.  I presume the sensor is a stick with electrical contacts that normally sense liquid and conduct electricity to report to the gauge the level in the tank - several points - at least half and full on the stick.  Doubt there is any other way - brush would never reach and wouldn't scrub the sensor even if you somehow got it through the waste hose into the tank.  Water would lose direct pressure in the hose and just fill the tank.  I think the only solution is the most foul one - it is about 8 or so screws to remove the sensor plate.  Hold your nose!  One alternative which probably wont work is empty the tank, then fill with water and maybe some soap type product, then take the boat for a good bouncy ride to clean the sensor.  then have the waste water pumped out and see what happens.

Thanks for the reply.  That is exactly my problem, with the indicator reading full all the time.

But, since my post, I've had an opportunity to think about this some more.

My boat's a 2004.  On my tank there is no plate to remove.  Take another look at yours. 

You should find a 4" or so round cap on top of the tank.  You need to get just right to see it.  It has a square head on top for a pair of channel lock pliers or similar.  My scrubbing would happen through this "bunghole". 

You should see a series of wires attached to 4 or 5 pairs of sensors oriented horizontally.  I'm going by memory.

I assume that, when working properly, the liquid in the tank completes a circuit between these horizontal pairs of electrical contacts that extend into the tank.  Depending on how many pairs of sensors are submerged, that is what gives the tank depth reading.

But, if they are gooped up, the electrical connection is not broken when the tank is empty.  That's why I expect that they are gooped up.  That brings me back to the spray or scrubbing.

Take another look and please post back.  I'm waiting to do mine.

I am pretty sure that on my eleghante the sensor has its own plate and I would expect the same for your boat.  They have to attach it some how. I have a picture but the upload on this website won't work for me.  my email is rogerschechter@verizon.net   email me and I will reply with a picture
