Hi, I just found this forum.  I live on the Ches. Bay just behind Hart-Miller Island.    I have a problem with an oil leak that just started when I took my boat out for a short cruise.  The boat wintered over in the water, I've been running it at idle and in gear at the pier with no problems for about a month.  when I took the cruise everything was going fine for close to 5 miles, I checked the bilge twice.  The second time I checked the bilge there was oil floating on top of water.  The water is from a leak at the strut.  I idled to the pier, about 1/2 mile, and shut her down.  It's not leaking from the top of the motor.  I just purchased an inspection mirror that I will use later on today.  Any suggesttions as to where to look.  Has anyone pulled thier motor and trans>  How difficult was it?  Thanks for any help.  John

suggestions:

Using a fairly large inspection mirror  2"x3" with extending handle helps. Its easier to use a flashlight with a larger mirror. Also a good drop light. Generally, flood the engine with light.

Theroughly Clean engine and transmission first. It's easier to spot trouble on a clean, dry engine/trans. Easier to spot lottsa things, you may stumble across something in the process. Run under way several times after cleaning and look for new signs of oil.

old technician addage: clean, inspect, calbrate.

easiest first-again -clean first: Transmission oil cooler hoses, transmission shifter o-ring, transmission output seal, engine oil filter/hoses, valve covers/bolts, breather hoses, timing gear cover, spark plugs, distributor holddown clamp.

If unable to trace, mechanics add a dye to oil which glows when a black (UV) light is passed over oil that has dye in it. kinda involved, but works. 

 

                   You'll solve it- what ever 'it' is!

Roy, thanks for getting back with me.  I put some oil in the motor this morning and it has leaked out by this afternoon.  Do you have any experience with pulling the motor and trans.  Doesn't really look that tough, just was looking for any tips or things to watch for.  Thanks, John

Guess it is a rusted out oil pan!I had a almost new boat that had been allowed to get water in the bilge and it rusted the pan out. Bill Check that!

John,

Sounds like you found the problem. Pulling the engine is last resort- That serous  a problem? 

 What do you need/want? fast turn around, project with no time limit, how much money you ready to spend?

Something will need to be able to move. Trailor/tri angle with hoist , forklift, boat yard, heavy duty dock etc.  Also helping hands, experienced professional mechanic, helpful Giant etc. may be needed.

Certainly not the only way to do things, but I'm an engineer, so I'm thinking 'orginize' (to break it down into bitesized items to do, to get, to arrange).

I just wanted to tell you that I saw the photos of your 280 and the boat is beautiful! A great job of upgrades and restoration.

I also have a 280 but it sure don't look like yours!But I'm working on it>Ha

Does anyone know if the oil  pan for this motor and boat is different from other boats?  If I find one before I pull the motor I don't want to waste money on something that is of no use.  John
