We're looking to move up to a MY or possibly command bridge in the 35' to 40' range.  We keep coming back to Bayliners.  I'm seeing many powered with Hino diesels.  I only have one opinion, from my boss' brother, who had a '89 38' with the 175 HP Hinos and he says they are great and very economical.  Only reason he sold it was to go faster as 15-17 knots did not work for offshore fising.  Anyone with opinions about these power units?

Hi jbarnett,

We have an 86 3870 with the 175 Hino's.  We have had our boat for 2 full seasons, and are very pleased with the entire vessel. We are based in Frankfort, Mi and cruise primarily Lake Michigan and yes we do also fish. Getting to and from our favorite fishing spot is not an issue for us. We normally run 10 miles or more to get there. How fast you run to get there, is a matter of personal preference.  When we were looking, we chose to pursre the 175's versus the 135's, cruising speed being the issue. The 135's put you in the trawler mode.  Hope this helps.
