I have a 20' 1983 Bayliner Explorer, with a rotton floor in the cuddy and rotton supporting beams.

I'm going to try to put new supporting timber along side the rotton ones and put on a new floor.

Has anyone gone through this before and am I on the right track?

Are these timbers used for anything other then supporting the floor?

Any help is appreciated

Joe M

Well Joe,

I think you have a problem that will never get better. I had a 85 19 1/2 FourWinds bow rider that had the same problem, I repaired it in the same fashion. However, the beams going bow to stern are a major part of the structure if they are rotted you will be relying on the glass to keep the boat together, not to mention the motor mounting is relying on that wood also.

Like I said, I fixed my boat and made all the repairs that I could but babied her on the water. West Marine has a product that you can apply to rotten wood that will help in the motor mount area. Donít get me wrong Joe when I got my FourWinds it had a small tree growing out of the deck, I fixed it the best I could and still use it today. You have a boat with a weak back so donít run it like she is new or it can bite you.
