I have Johnson & Towers DD 6-92s in my 1986 CC500. It has aluminum casings on the exchangers, these can be damaged by cavitation and need to be replaced. I have checked with J&T and they have the replacement in steel for 3.2 boat units each. (boat unit =$1000.00) Does anyone know of an aftermarket replacement or a cheaper source of replacements. This would be for the casing only, the cores should last forever (per J&T)  Mine are not bad now but I would like to have a source when (not if) they go bad.

I understand when they go bad it will be pin-hole leaks not a major failure again per J&T.

Hi Furman1,

Wow! That's a scary proposition.  I've never heard of cavitation in the heat exchanger although it often occurs in blocks.  I don't have an answer but perhaps someone on www.boatdiesel.com/HOME.htm might have an answer.  This site seems to be populated by diesel mechanics.
