I just noticed this thread - not sure if anyone's still reading it. I have a 1980 Weekender 260. Great boat. Nice wood inside, but it is a special laminated plywood. I don't recall, but it had a special name. The plywood is surprisingly solid, with patches in the knotholes, done very well. Seems to hold up. I never figured out what the laminate is, but it's not wood. Mine was in bad shape when I got the boat, but it didn't have any mildew spots. Believe it or not it had a lot of sun damage - yes inside. That foredeck hatch of plexiglas actually amplifies the sun! I've since put a 1/4 inch smoked acrylic on top of it.
Anyway, I've tried cleaners and rubbing compound, and even some hand sanding on it. You can do it carefully. All you can hope for is to clean whatever you have on it - it will never get shiny from this. And, you have to be careful not to rub off the imitation wood-grain look, although it may still look better than what you have. The best thing I found for the wood is boat wax. The 3M liquid I got last year has worked the best. That will put some shine on it.
