I have my eye on a '79 Carver Mariner 2896.  Great looking boat - nice teak - with twin re-built 302's.  Does anyone have any suggestions for things to look for before I take the leap into Carver ownership?  I am definitely getting a mechanical and hull survey.  Any other advice would be greatly appreciated.

Erik,

The main thing you need to look out for on these boats is water penitration into the wood coring used throughout the boat.  As long as you get a good surveyor you should get a good assessment.  I love my '82 Mariner.  Have you been to http://www.webspawner.com/users/mitchmerc/index.html  ?

Thanks DanO - when you refer to wood coring are you talking about the wood stringers or is there more wood that I need to know about on these boats?

Yes.  Until recent years Carver built their boats with a sandwhich construction of fiberglass, wood, fiberglass in the bottom, decks and cabin sides.  A crack in the glass would allow water pentration resulting in soft spots - a potentally expensive repair.  Your surveyor should pay cloase attention to the areas around through hulls.  However, there are a whole lot of good survivors out there - a competent surveyor knows how to spot this stuff.

I finally did purchase a '76 Mariner. I am pretty excited to get her home and go through the minor notes on an otherwise great survey. She has twin 302's with the high perf. 351 heads.  Thanks again... more questions to follow like do you have filter on your raw water cooling line that goes to the v-drive? Some people say 'no' as filters can clog and others say they are a must...Any ideas?
