Hi all -

need some advice - I bought a 22 ft Revenge this spring with a 225 Evinrude outboard. It's a bit of a "project" boat for this winter (all cosmetic stuff) but has been a good realible rig all summer. My question is - it came rigged with trim tabs which I really haven't found a need for so far. Other similar boats I've seen pictured on the web have never shown trim tabs installed. I'm thinking of removing the tabs this winter to make room for a small swim platform. Anybody have any experience/opinions on a REAL need for trim tabs on this rig? Don't want to make a change I'll regret but I could get rid of a lot of clutter in the cockpit and on the stern by taking these off.

I had a 20 ft revenge. 1988 it was a great boat... did not have trim tabs. the boat was great... I always wished I had the 22... I never felt it needed trim tabs and I guess the 22 does not... however I would not remove them until I ran the boat. I now have a 23 walkaround it's a 94. I love the boat. It has a 8.5 beam planes great. Under certain sea conditions the trim tabs make a big difference. I wouldn't be so quick to get take them off the 22 if they are working properly because I would guess that they will give you a better balanced more fuel efficent ride at certain times, if you plan on running the boat is ruff seas... good luck

The trim tabs helps you to control the boat at top speed without bouncing left and right when you hit a few bumps of waves, makes you plane faster too. In my outboards, I do the same thing by putting those doel-fins. It makes a big difference and stabilizes the boat at high speeds. I will not remove it. As for the swim platform ... just get a swim ladder ... the one that is portable and detachable ... easy to store .... and out of the way when not in use. Sooner or later you might decide to get a kicker on that boat ... the swim platform will get in the way. A kicker is your best insurance when the main engine clonks out. That is what you need more thatn the swim platform. The ocean can be so deadly when the weather turns bad.

Thanks for the input folks - perhaps a bit of clarification.

I have run the boat all summer much of it at high speed (the kids like to go fast/ski) and this boat is solid as a rock (it's a Boston Whaler after all). It does have a kicker already (25 hp) so the swim platform I was looking at was one that sat on one side of the transom only (with a flip up ladder).

The boat does dig in a bit when you firewall the throttle from a dead stop (like for ski pulling) and the tabs make a difference in this situation but otherwise I really haven't noticed much difference - and like I said before I have yet to see a picture of a similar boat with tabs.

I'll keep watching the forum and maybe do some experimenting now that the weather is cool enough to keep the kids at home most of the time.

We have a 23 foot Sea Ray that we use for a lot of water sports. Ened up putting something called "Smart Tabs" on it last season because of the faster planing. Smart Tabs are gas actuated, and don't require all the pneumatics that take up storage and weigh down the boat.

A friend of ours has had them on his boat for 5 years now with great success. If you decide to take off the trim tabs, these could be what you need.

I have a 25 ft. Outrage (commercial hull 1987) For the first 18 years it had no trim tabs. Side to side leveling was done by adjusting the relative angle of the twin 150 Yamahas. Two years ago I installed trim tabs and it has made the boat more comfortable to ride, allows the engines to be trimmed together for maximum efficiency and I am sure has increased fuel mileage. I would not be without them.
