we bought a 34' californian 1982, and i'm learning how to strip and varnish the trim. 

i'd like opinions on the method used to apply the first coat...my husband says 50% minerial spirits & 50% varnish on 1st coat of bare wood, then 1/3 & 2/3 parts on 2nd...

is this necessary?

My wife and I also have a 34' 1982 Californian and I have tried three
finishes on the exterior teak- Epiphanes/ Cetol/ Minwax Helmsman
varnish- I find the Cetol the best/ most durable- when I used the
Epiphanes I did it per instructions- stopped at 6 coats (weather too cool)-
during the winter and spring of the next season it started to fail- I think
the teak is too oily---so I am going back to the Sikkens Cetol...

I Have a 50' Californian, I refinished the teak toe rails, fly bridge doors and trim etc with Honey teak. It is a two part finish applied in 2 steps. First I applied 3 coats of "Honey", followed by 3 coats of clear. After that you scuff it with a scotch bright pad annually (or so) and apply another coat of clear. I finished almost 2 years ago and have not had time to put the annual coat on yet. Honestly it looks just like it did when I finished it almost 2 years ago.
