Late summer signals the home stretch of the Bassmaster Elite Series season, plus a whole lotta Zona’s Awesome Fishing Show episodes that need to be filmed, and perhaps most importantly, me picking my fantasy football league roster.
Not to mention we’re fresh off the ICAST Show, which is the fishing tackle industry’s annual ‘show and tell’ trade show where all the cool new products are revealed.

Seeing lures I’ve been working on to develop with Strike King for months, or rod actions I’ve discussed for weeks with Shimano, all finally come to fruitio...... Read More

Not only was I not … not … voted the 2013 Tower of the Year, heck, I’m not even allowed to drive this giant red TowBoatUS boat.
But at BASSFest on Lake Chickamauga last week, I met the people who are, and they rock louder than Nikki Sixx.

I do a sweepstakes every year with BoatUS ANGLER, and believe it or not, I actually take it serious.
Look, I’m not the smartest crayon in the box, but I’m wise enough to realize that while I’m fortunate to fish all the time, to the person that wins that trip, there’s a real good chance they only get to fish a few times a year, and it’s likely they’ve never caught a boatload of big smallmouth
That said, it’s a big deal to the sweepstakes winner. And in turn, it’s a big deal to me.
We’ve had three different sweepstakes winners now, and it&r...... Read More

I attended a local college, and spent even more time hanging-out at universities – if you know what I mean. But I’m pretty certain that if college bass fishing would have existed back then, I’d have hung around campus a little longer with a much greater purpose in mind.
Speaking of college bass fishing – one of the more incredible moments in our sport’s history occurred last month in Muskegon at the Carhartt College Classic Bracket tournament.
Remarkably – again like last year – Jordan Lee surfaced to the championship round among more than 600 student...... Read More

As a kid, growing up on Chicago’s South Side, summer weekends often meant driving to Michigan with my dad to catch, or at least attempt to catch, the elusive “Gator Kong” – my name for Northern Pike.
Maybe it was the fact that they looked like “Eddie the Head” who appeared on Iron Maiden album covers that made me love them. No doubt, three footers with fins and teeth are captivating, and as a kid, big Northern Pike were the Mike Tyson of the early 90s in the freshwater fish world.
Let’s just say Dad and I never really mastered the art of catching mons...... Read More

Family. Friends. Fishing. Football - in that order. I’m definitely a freak for NFL football. And that’s why I strategically try not to schedule anything in this crazy life of mine on Sundays between September and early February.
I also make it a point not to schedule anything during the Detroit Lions/Kevin VanDam Charity Fishing Tournament. Are you kidding me? That event is my Bassmaster Classic and Super Bowl rolled into one.

Earlier this month I ran around like James Hetfield at a Metallica concert trying to take care of business at ICAST -- the fishing industry's largest trade show. And this week I'm in tune with all that's going on in Little Rock at the Carhartt College Series National Championship, and it’s got me thinking a lot about a term I hear far too often - "growing the sport".
Here's the deal. We talk about "growing the sport" - but dudes, we ain't doing near enough of it. That's just a fact. Competitive college fishing like the BoatUS Collegiate Bass Fishing Championship and t...... Read More

Boat Ramps are Like Security Checkpoints at Airports: Nobody Wants to Wait in That Line
Memorial Day is coming up. It's a time to slow down and remember every soldier that has made a sacrifice, suffered death or a life changing injury so that goobers like me could run around covering bass tournaments and filming fishing shows. Two simple words: "Thank You."
