Concluding the Table Rock event I stopped by Lake Dardanelle to look the place over. We were going there for stop #5 on the Elite Series. It’s funny, often we don’t fish much during some pre-practice periods when we visit a lake we’ve never been too. I drove the whole lake in about 2 days and then did a little fishing on day 3. It reminded me a lot of where I grew up in Northern Virginia on the Potomac River. The Potomac is a shallow water fishery and Dardanelle is just the same. Arriving home to Del Rio later that week I was on Lake Amistad guiding almost every day until I wa...... Read More

Not only was I not … not … voted the 2013 Tower of the Year, heck, I’m not even allowed to drive this giant red TowBoatUS boat.
But at BASSFest on Lake Chickamauga last week, I met the people who are, and they rock louder than Nikki Sixx.

My 40th birthday was Saturday, April 12th. Although most weekends I fish a tournament, my wife and I were having friends over to celebrate my transition into old age. So, I decided to forgo the bass tournament scene and take my eleven year old crappie fishing that Saturday morning. Since I am a terrible crappie fisherman, I opted to spend a few hours on the lake Friday afternoon in hopes of finding some places to keep my son’s interest. I wandered around the lake caught a few crappie and was generally enjoying a beautiful spring afternoon when my phone rang. It was my friend, Brent Sain. ...... Read More

Several years ago, at a fishing expo, I passed a booth where a video showed a topwater plug I had used as a kid, but hadn’t seen in decades. I talked to the owner who was very enthusiastic about his single lure lineup! He handed me a couple and I packed them away, forgetting about the lure and where I had stashed them.

I spent the week off between St. Johns River and Table Rock at a great friend’s house on Toledo Bend. I was able to do a little practicing and get some things in the office accomplished and most importantly, relax and have a great time with friends. The bass at Toledo were just coming to the beds strong and I figured the fish at Table Rock were going to be in pre-spawn pattern. The cold weather conditions most of the country was experiencing were hanging on into these early spring months. I was excited to fish a highland reservoir that has some similarities to my home Lake Amistad. Table...... Read More

A lot of people ask a lot of questions about my guide service when they are booking a trip. They want to know what kind of boat I have, what we will be using and how the fishing has been. Parents wanting to expose their kids to the outdoors inquire about my willingness to take kids on my boat.
Of course I love taking kids out. In one day I can teach them skills that will put them light years ahead of other kids in the sport! I focus on teaching while building self-esteem, enabling them to learn the basic skills to achieve success. It is here that kids, if not already, become hooked on fishi...... Read More

Fathers with sons or daughters, mothers with sons or daughters, husbands and is a family affair! I have to admit when I was asked to take a son with his 85-year-old mother, I was skeptical. It’s tough to fish all day. Bass fishing requires a lot of casting. At 85, man or woman, it could be a long day! I anticipated having to do a lot of extra work, helping her to the back deck, making casts and other extra work. I agreed to book a full day, 8-hour trip.
Miriam was a bit shaky coming aboard, but settled in like a pro. She bundled up and buckled her Mustang auto-inflatable ...... Read More

Off to a great start… I enter the third event of 2014 cashing 2 checks in the first 2 events! It had been 10 years since I fished the St. Johns River in Forida. and I was going to keep to my game plan of fishing a smaller specific area of a tournament venue to keep my practice simple. I was ready to make it 3 checks in a row! It is worth noting that Florida fishing in the spring time has been a major nemesis of mine throughout my entire career. I have cashed a few checks and had good events in Florida during the fall season… but this year I was determined to do the same in the spr...... Read More

For the first time in my career, an injury has sidelined me for an extended period of time. In my former work lives I prided myself in never missing a single day of work or even school. It doesn't matter what it was that forced me to cancel 3 weeks of far.
It's the worst thing that a guide has to do. I hate canceling trips. In the past 15 years I have only cancelled due to weather or fishing conditions. Never due to my personal issues. It's bad enough calling off a trip due to high winds or storms, completely understandable due to safety, but for any other reason it's
unacceptabl...... Read More

The second tournament of my season, but first Elite Event, has a lot of meaning for me as this is the lake I fished my first ‘big’ event on, a BFL Regional back in 1999. It had been since then that I had visited Lake Seminole, but honestly not a whole lot had changed. I feel at home fishing grass lakes since I grew up fishing grass on the Potomac River and grass is typically present at Lake Amistad where I guide. I was pumped to get the Elite season underway!
