Moonsets or Sunsets?
Now this is question made us reminisce and wonder, so we're grateful to 14-year-old Alicia R. in Perth, Australia. "My family and I are going cruising next year, and we read your Logs every other week, and I'm wondering, which do you like better, the moonsets or the sunsets?"

From Douglas: Before we went cruising, our friend Andy on Raven gave us a boatload of advice. The best thing he said was, "make sure that at sunset, no matter what you're doin...... Read More

1. Some guide books emphasize navigation, others history, some try to cover both. Often we’ve found it helpful and worthwhile to buy two guide books, each emphasizing one or the other aspect, just so we’ll get the maximum experience.
2. It doesn’t make sense to spend all that money on a boat and the fuel and then miss out on much of the experience because you don’t spend the bucks on good guide books so that you can get the whole picture.
3. Researching a destination river or seaport or region on the internet is free and informative.
4. Contacting chambers of comme...... Read More

Phone Calls From the Western Caribbean
Nicole and Jean R., from Brussels, Belgium, just moved aboard Tigré, their 1987 Amel Sharky. She wrote, "I'm going to miss our grand-children. How big of a hassle is it to make phone calls from the Western Caribbean? Is it expensive?"

From Douglas and Bernadette: The hassle of making calls depends on where you are, and how much you want privacy and comfort. Calling gets easier and cheaper every month, because of the galloping ...... Read More

On Hurricane Awareness
1. Never let the clear skies fool you into thinking the forecasters are going to be wrong. The day can turn from beautiful weather to outer bands of wind and rain in just a few hours, and some of those outer bands can pack enough rain to flood, enough wind to damage, and even tornadoes.
2. Don’t plan on fighting a hurricane during the storm. Prepare before they come and seek safety. Stick your hand out the window while you’re driving down the highway at just 45 miles per hour. (If you don’t mind possibly getting hurt in the process.) Feel the force of ...... Read More

Ustupu Celebrates The Kuna Revolution
By Douglas Bernon
Every year in Kuna Yala, in major villages across the region, there are community-wide, stop-everything celebrations to mark the anniversary of a successful Kuna uprising in 1925, in which the Panamanian police and military got themselves booted right out. The reasons for the revolt were economic and political, but also, just as significantly, they were cultural. The Panamanians had opened up farming, foresting, fishing, and turtling to non-Kunas, an...... Read More
