Bridges
By Tom Neale
1. When approaching a bridge always monitor the local bridge frequency on VHF, as well as channel 16. These change as you enter different states. For example, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia use channel 13, South Carolina and Florida use channel 09.
2. Believe it or not, many boaters don’t even know which bridge they’re approaching and call out the name for a wrong bridge when requesting an opening. Have an UP TO DATE guide book with bridge listings, including bridge names and schedules. Even schedule listings updated annually will sometimes be wrong bec...... Read More

Cape May Inlet, New Jersey
The USCG Local Notices to Mariners 5th District #0551 and #552 dated December 21 and 29, 2004 report that there has been a report of shoaling in the Cape May Inlet to 6 ft or less at MLW between Cape May Inlet East Jetty Light “4” and Cape May West Jetty Light “5”. It is supposed to be in the middle of the channel and in line with the Cape May Inlet Range Lights. I spoke to the OD at Cape May Coast Guard Station on Dec. 29, 2004 and was informed that dredging is currently taking place in the inlet, although the same Local Notices mentioned abo...... Nassau Grouper “No Take” in Bahamas
The Bahamian government has announced that there will be a two- month period this winter during which no Nassau grouper may be taken from the waters of the Bahamas. The ban starts on Dec. 16, 2004 and ends Feb. 16, 2005. The purpose for this ban is to protect the species during its spawning period. The previous “no take” periods had been for only one month during spawning. This popular food fish has been overfished in recent years. Penalties are reported to be severe.

Cooling Cures
1. If you’re stuck with compressors which use the “Old Stuff” such as R12, don’t dismay. Repairs aren’t necessarily as costly as some say. Refrigeration mechanics must be trained and licensed to use R 12, and the cost of the product is now prohibitive because of its adverse effect on the ozone layer. While an old R12 unit will mean you’re going to be paying more, perhaps you won’t need to pay as much as some mechanics will suggest. There are so called “drop in” products which will work on the old compressors and which aren&...... Read More

The Last Ditch
By Douglas Bernon
Bernadette says I’m too quick and critical in my judgments. Bernadette says I’m too intemperate in sharing my opinions. Bernadette says it’s one thing to rant on and on to her about this and that, but that I ought to watch what I say in print about the Intracoastal Waterway. Bernadette says a lot of things.
I say, “pish tosh.”
Only once have I felt obliged to apologize—to a reader in Delaware who...... Read More
