1. A cheating bar is something that you shouldn’t use, but that most mechanics end up using occasionally.
2. It’s essentially a metal pipe that you can fit over your wrench or over the ratchet handle of a socket wrench. It’s considerably longer than the tool with which you use it, thus providing much greater leverage. How much longer depends on how much you want to risk REALLY messing things up.
3. A major risk of using a cheating bar is that it’s likely to break off the head of the bolt you’re trying to back out.
4. Only use it as a last resort, after you&rs...... Read More

The years fly by, and here I am, 40 years old, with an ex-husband, two boys, and an unfulfilled dream. One son is 16, the other 13, my days of hands-on mothering and influence are almost over, and so is the time I have left to take my children on the adventure I’d always hoped we’d have together. That is, the family adventure I dreamed we’d have, before the complicated twists and turns of life got in the way.
Nicholas and Sam had always known that I had sailed around the world when I was 18 on a 26-foot sloop named Varuna. Over the years, they’d heard me talk about it &...... Read More

The Berner Boys. Nicholas is 16, Sam is 13, and both will be one year older by the end of Shangri-La’s voyage, and hopefully much wiser. While out cruising, they’ll keep up with their education through a structured and accredited home-schooling program — Nicholas with a traditional eleventh-grade curriculum, Sam with an eighth. The piano will have to stay at home, a much-appreciated break from 10 years of daily practicing for Nicholas, seven for Sam. What they will really miss from their lives in the Vermont hills are friends, Tarzoon (the 21-year-old cat), the bathtub, skiing...... Read More

Voyage Itinerary
Officially, the trip already started in St. Maarten, where Shangri-La was purchased, refreshed, and re-splashed after sitting for a year on the hard. From there, over April break 2007, we sailed her down to Curacao and hauled her out again at Curacao Marine. There she sat for the rest of the summer of 2007, including the bulk of hurricane season. Around the third week in September, 2007, I say goodbye to my house and fly back down to launch her one more time and start preparations for The Trip.
My boys and Grandpa, my father, will join me about 10 days later. Somewhere toward...... Read More

Appearances
Ever since her return from her solo circumnavigation in 1987 at the age of 21, Tania has lectured to many different groups all around the country and overseas. To rapt audiences, she illustrates the story of her youthful adventure with an exotic slide show, and reflectively tells of how she once took on the biggest challenge she would ever face, triumphed, and how this experience has forever impacted her life. This is a timeless, genuinely recounted and inspirational story you won’t soon forget.
To see more about her talk and for information on bookings, Tania is represented...... Read More
