Centerville Turnpike Bridge (AICW Mile 15.2) Restricted Opening Schedule this Weekend:
Mariners are advised that structural repairs are scheduled at the Centerville Turnpike (SR170) Bridge (36.723169°-76.186677°), at AICW mile 15.2, across the Albemarle and Chesapeake Canal, in Chesapeake, VA beginning at 9 a.m., on Saturday, April 27, 2013 and ending at 6 p.m., on Sunday, April 28, 2013. To facilitate repairs, the drawbridge will open on signal every three hours on the following schedule: on Saturday, April 27th at 9 a.m., 12 p.m. (noon), 3 p.m., 6 p.m., 9 p.m., and on Sunday, April 28th at 12 a.m. (midnight), 3 a.m., 6 a.m., 9 a.m., 12 p.m. (noon), 3 p.m. and 6 p.m.; will open on signal for hazardous material vessels with a one-hour advance notice by calling (757-547-3632); and will open for an emergency as soon as safely possible. In case of inclement weather, the alternate dates will be rescheduled to weekend of May 4 and May 5, 2013. At all other times, the drawbridge will operate in accordance with the operating regulations set out in Title 33 Code of Federal Regulations Part 117.997(i). In the closed position to vessels, this swing-type drawbridge provides a vertical clearance of approximately four feet, above mean high water. Gilmerton Bridge Work, Barge in Channel:
MARINERS ARE ADVISED THAT ON APRIL 29, 2013 PCL CONSTRUCTION WILL BE PLACING AN ENVIRONMENTAL CONTAINMENT CELL AROUND THE OLD BASCULE PIER (36.775082° -76.294999°) AND ITS FENDERS ON THE EAST SIDE ONLY. THE CHANNELWARD SIDE OF THE CONTAINMENT CELL WILL BE RIGIDLY CONNECTED TO THE EXISTING FENDER SYSTEM WITH 8" X 8" TIMBER FENDERS ATTACHED, EFFECTIVELY REDUCING THE CHANNEL HORIZONTAL CLEARANCE FROM 125 FT TO 124 FT. DURING INSTALLATION AND REMOVAL THERE WILL BE A 60 FT WIDE BARGE IN THE CHANNEL, WHICH CAN BE MOVED, WITH A 1 HOUR ADVANCED NOTICE. THE CONTAINMENT CELL IS EXPECTED TO BE IN PLACE FOR APPROXIMATELY 90 DAYS. PCL CAN BE REACHED VIA VHF CHANNEL 13 AND 16 OR VIA THE GILMERTON BRIDGE TENDER ON VHF CHANNEL 13. Sandy Debris Reminder from USCG:
Mariners and all waterway users are reminded that Hurricane SANDY resulted in massive amounts of both floatable debris and submerged hazards to navigations in the offshore and inland waterways of New York and New Jersey. Much of this debris will remain in offshore areas as it gradually moves shoreward. Mariners are urged to navigate with caution in these waterways and report any hazard to navigation or debris fields to the Coast Guard. (5th District LNM Week 13/2013)

79 Upper Savannah River Markers to be Discontinued:
Permanently discontinue all Upper Savannah River Daydeacons and Buoys from Statue Mile 27.5 thru Statue Mile 199 (LLNRs 5170-5575) (32-14-04.965N, 081-09-01.507W - 33-28-18.498N, 081-56-50.740W). This totals 79 aids to navigation. Your recommendations for additional aids and or concerns are welcome. Darien River Hazard:
The Coast Guard received a report of Darien River DBN 26 (LLNR 36827.3) (31-20-53.467N, 081-24-53.950W) is damaged and missing dayboards. The remains of the pile are 3ft above water at high tide. A TRLB with Fl Q R characterisitics is marking the wreckage. Mariners are advised to use extreme caution while transiting the area. (7th District LNM Week 16/2013)
Survey Ops off St Johns River, Update:
The Research Vessel STRAIT HUNTER will be conducting Survey Operations from the Atlantic Ocean, Jacksonville Beach, Florida into the southern approach of the St. Johns River Entrance (30.361556°-81.328673°) on March 18 to May 15, 2013. There will be submerged and floating cable lines associated with survey operation. The vessel will have limited maneuverability while towing survey equipment up to 1600 yards astern. All vessels within a two mile radius of the Research Vessel should contact the R/V STRAIT HUNTER on VHF-FM channel 16. Operations will be conducted (24) hours a day, (7) days a week. Mariners are urged to use extreme caution while in the vicinity of R/V STRAIT HUNTER. (7th District LNM Week 17/2013)
Jacksonville Demolition and Reconstruction Work:
All mariners transiting the St Johns River near Blount Island (30.391979° -81.531967°) are advised of the demolition and reconstruction of JAXPORT Berth 32. The Port Authority will commence operations sometime during the week of April 22, 2013. The JAXPORT Berth 32 will not be operational until approximately November 2013. Mariners are advised to avoid encroachment on JAXPORT Berth 32 due to lack of structural strength and risk of collapse. Beach Renourishment, Fort Pierce:
Placement of sand related to renourishment of 1.3 miles of critically eroded shoreline located immediately south of Fort Pierce Inlet (27.468674°-80.289572°) to begin April 12 and completed approximately May 30, 2013. Canaveral Dredging Update:
Norfolk Dredging Company will commence dredging operations near Cape Canaveral, Florida (28.411652° -80.624017°) on or May 1, 2013. The project will consist of dredging various berths at Cape Canaveral as well as the Federal Channel from the Trident Turning Basin out to sea. Scows will be towed from the jobsite to either the Ocean Disposal Area located offshore of Cape Canaveral Florida or the Near Shore Disposal Area (NSDA) located near Cocoa Beach Florida. The project is expected to continue until approximately September 30, 2013. The dredge "ATLANTIC" will monitor VHF-FM channels 13 and 16. St. Lucie River Shoaling:
Shoaling has been observed between St Lucie River Lighted Buoy 2 (LLNR 50635) (27-10-00.459N, 080-10-54.709W) and St Lucie River Buoy 4 (LLNR 50645). The minimum depth observed is 5.5 feet at MLW on the red side of the channel. Mariners are requested to transit the area with caution. (7th District LNM Week 16/2013)
Okeechobee Waterway Update:
April 24, 2013 at 2400 hours the lake level was reported at 13.56 feet and the navigational depths were reported at 7.50 feet for Route 1 (26°58'32.23"N, 80°38'22.92"W) and 5.70 feet for Route 2 (Rim Route) (26°47'0.61"N, 26°47'0.61"N). Palm Beach Harbor Maintenance Dredging Update:
Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company will commence dredge operations on or about April 22, 2013.
Project Description: Palm Beach Harbor (26.766914° -80.047387°) Maintenance Dredging
Work consists of dredging approximately 5,000 cubic yards of material from the Northern Turning Basin in Palm Beach Harbor with placement at the Palm Beach Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site (ODMDS) located approximately five miles east of the Lake Worth Inlet jetties.
The clamshell Dredge 54 is scheduled to complete work by approximately April 30, 2013. Also on site will be (1) towing tug, a material barge, and a survey vessel. Dredge operations will be daylight hours, (7) days per week. The dredge will monitor VHF Channels 13 and 16. All mariners are requested to transit the area with extreme caution. AICW Boynton Inlet Area Dredging Update:
Center Marine Contracting will commence maintenance dredging operations on or about March 1, 2013 in the Lake Worth Lagoon near the South Lake Worth Inlet (a/k/a/ Boynton Inlet) (26.546104° -80.048917°) in Palm Beach County, Florida. Operations have moved out of the "Sand Trap" and dredging will begin in the ICW April 21, 2013. The Dredge "ELLICOTT 1170" along with workboat 3 workboats: Fatboy and Skiffs 1 & 2 will monitor VHF channel 16. There will be submerged and floating pipeline associated with the dredging operations. The pipeline will be positioned along the channel edge. Orations will be 24 hours per day, 7 days per week and expected to be completed by May 1, 2013. Sub-surface Research Buoys off Fort Lauderdale:
The Southeast National Marine Renewable Energy Center (SNMREC) at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) is planning to install four sub-surface moored Acoustic Doppler Current Profiler (ADCP) buoys on Tuesday, May 21, 2013 between 0600 and 1800 (met-ocean conditions pending) off the coast of southern Broward County. Each buoy is moored approximately 15 meters above the seafloor via wire rope to an acoustic release and a steel clump anchor. All buoys will be recovered via acoustic release after a six to nine month deployment (recovery date TBD). At that time, the anchor will be abandoned in place. A notice specifying the exact date and time will be circulated prior to recovery. Actual moored locations will be determined and then provided after deployment.

Bird Stake Installation for "Natural Fertilizer" Continues:
Biscayne National Park, Miami Dade County, Florida will commence the second featherbed site the week of April 29, 2013. The seagrass habitat restoration project includes the temporary installation of bird stakes. Bird stakes will be placed in restoration areas to encourage roosting of waterfowl and provide natural fertilizer to the seagrass beds. The bird stakes are constructed of 3/4 inch PVC poles and 4 inch x 4 inch x 2 inch treated wood blocks attached to poles. Bird stakes will be placed throughout the interior of the injury areas at 6.6 feet intervals. "NO BOATING/RESTRICTION AREA" signs will be posted at the restored areas (sites listed below) for approximately 12-18 months. The restoration signs, constructed of aluminum will be 46cm wide x 36 cm tall with a white reflective background. Marina and Dock Construction, Key West:
Charley Toppino & Sons Inc will commence marina and dock construction operations at Safe Harbor, Stock Island, Florida on or about April 10, 2013. Operations will be Monday through Saturday from 7:00am to 7:00pm. Equipment used will be a crane, pile driver and skiffs. The location of ops:

Gulf of Mexico Wave Glider Buoy:
The National Data Buoy Center is deploying a Wave Glider buoy in the Gulf of Mexico on April 1, 2013. The wave glider is approx 6 feet long x 2 feet wide, displays little freeboard above the surface, the hull is painted with a red anti-fouling coating. The glider has a single mast extending approximately 3 feet above the surface and at night displays an all-round white light. The glider propels through the water via a multi fin system that is actuated by waves. NDBC Mission Control Center located at Stennis Space Center, MS controls the wave gliders movement via remote operation. The glider is intended to operate within a 10NM radius of the following position: 27-24.069N, 085-40.427W. This approx position is 157NM west of Sarasota, FL and 136NM south of Cape San Blas, Florida. The glider is intended to remain in this operating area for an indefinite period. Mariners are to avoid close proximity, or any other interference of the buoy's data gathering function. (7th District LNM Week 14/2013)

Florida Bridge Update: From the USCG 7th District LNM Week 17/2013:
NOTE: Information new with this alert is in bold. There are many on-going projects lasting sometimes for years. You can "Search" a bridge name for previous East Coast Alerts that may contain information that is still current. Bridges that have vertical height reduced (or other severe restriction) will remain on this list until the restriction is removed.
Grand Avenue Bridge, Ortega River: Superior Construction is repairing the Grand Ave (SR 211), across Ortega River (30.280208° -81.705525°) mile 0.3, Duval County, Florida. From 8:00 a.m. on April 29 through 5:00 p.m. on May 10, 2013, the Grand Avenue Bridge will be on a single-leaf opening schedule. No double-leaf opening will be available throughout this time.
SR 312 Bridge (AICW Mile 780.0): The Coast Guard Bridge Branch has approved a vertical clearance reduction of four foot reducing the vertical clearance to 61 feet for one half of the navigable channel at the SR 312 Bridge (29.862672° -81.309784°) across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway mile 780.0, Lake City (St. Augustine), St John’s County, Florida, through August, 2013.
Addison Point Bridge (AICW Mile 885), Update: Royal Bridge Incorporated has advised the Coast Guard that they will be painting the NASA Parkway/Addison Point/SR 405 Bridge (28.527151° -80.765469°) across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway mile 885, Canaveral, Florida from April 1 to May 29, 2013. The bascule portion of the span will be placed in the open to navigation position during this project and will not affect navigation. Starting May 9, 2013, the curfew period for the John F. Kennedy Space Center bridge, mile 885 at Addison Point will be extended to read: The draw shall open on signal; except that, from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday, except Federal holidays, the draw need not open. This portion of the work will be completed on June 21, 2013. NASA, the bridge owner, has advised that they will be scheduling work on this bridge that may require single-leaf operations from Monday 13 May through Tuesday 2 July 2013. The details for double-leaf openings will be published in a future Local Notice to Mariners.
Flagler Memorial Bridge (AICW Mile 1021.8): Bridge Construction/Waterway Restriction/Temporary Bridge Regulation Changes. The Florida Department of Transportation will be engaged with the emergency repairs of the existing Flagler Memorial Bridge (26.718169° -80.047089°) across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway mile 1021.8, Palm Beach, Florida, starting in April 2013. In order to complete these repairs, waterway restrictions caused by construction equipment at the bridge may limit horizontal navigational clearance to 35 feet at night and 70 feet during the day. Night time restrictions will limit horizontal clearance to 35 feet between the hours of 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily for up to three months. A 70 foot horizontal clearance will be made available with a three hour notice to the ON-SCENE TUG. Daytime restrictions will limit horizontal clearance to 70 feet between the hours of 6:01 a.m. and 8:59 p.m. daily for up to three months. A temporary waterway restriction limiting horizontal clearance to 70 feet will remain in effect at the existing Flagler Memorial Bridge until the replacement bridge is complete. Mariners are advised that changes to navigational clearance may be necessary as repair conditions develop.
The temporary regulations for the Flagler Memorial and Royal Park Bridges will remain as follows: Flagler Memorial Bridge schedule will remain on the quarter hour and three-quarter hour except that from 8:16 a.m. to 9:14 a.m. and from 4:16 p.m. to 5:14 p.m., The Royal Park Bridge will remain on the hour and hour-hour schedule except that from 8:01 a.m. to 8:59 a.m. and from 4:31 p.m. to 5:29 p.m. this bridge will be allowed to remain closed to navigation, Monday through Friday until the repairs are completed on the Flagler Memorial Bridge.
Due to the unusual circumstances associated with the bridge structure, the bridge owner has requested an emergency back-up plan in case the repairs are unable to be accomplished as anticipated. If the Flagler Memorial Bridge malfunctions and is left in the open to navigation position, the Royal Park and Southern Boulevard Bridges will be placed on restricted schedules to accommodate increased vehicular traffic. If an emergency occurs, the Royal Park Bridge will be on an hourly schedule at the quarter after the hour, except that from 8:16 a.m. to 10:14 a.m. and from 4:16 p.m. to 6:14 p.m. this bridge will be allowed to remain closed to navigation. The Southern Boulevard Bridge will remain on the twice an hour schedule (top of the hour and bottom of the hour), except that from 8:31 a.m. to 9:59 a.m. and from 4:31 p.m. to 5:59 p.m. this bridge will be allowed to remain closed to navigation. Additional waterway restrictions will be promulgated once the new Flagler Memorial Bridge construction commences.
Lantana Bridge (AICW Mile 1031): GLF Construction Corporation has advised this office that the demolition and replacement of the East Ocean Avenue Bridge (26.583375°-80.046117°) across the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway mile 1031, Lantana, Palm Beach County, Florida will start on March 20, 2012 and will continue until November 15, 2013. From April 22 through May 21, 2013, a work barge will be in the AICW which will only allow 62 feet of horizontal clearance. If your vessel needs more than 62 feet of horizontal clearance for safe passage, please provide GLF a twenty four hour notice by contacting the tug "Miss Thelma" on marine channel 16 or by calling (954) 829-2781. The contractor may have a barge in the waterway from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., Monday through Friday and from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Saturday between these dates.
Ocean Avenue Bridge, Boca Raton Inlet: Due to an inspection of the Ocean Boulevard (SR A1A) Bridge (26.335251° -80.072247°), Boca Raton, Palm Beach County, Florida, this bridge will be allowed to open on the top of the hour and bottom of the hour from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting April 24 through April 26, 2013. The contractor will have a snooper bucket on the structure which will lower the vertical clearance. This vehicle can be moved if at least 10 minutes of advance notice is provided to the bridge tender.
Treasure Island Causeway: The City of Treasure Island has advised the Coast Guard that due to emergency repairs the Treasure Island Causeway Bridge (27.769918°-82.754064°) across the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway, Treasure Island, Florida, will be placed on single-leaf operations from April 16 through May 16, 2013. A double-leaf is available with a one-hour advance notice to the bridge tender. The bridge tender can be contacted on VHF-FM Channel 9.
USCG Fifth District
Coastal Waters from Shrewsbury River, New Jersey to Little River, South Carolina
NJ Bridge Construction/Repairs:
Mariners are advised to take caution when approaching the construction site for the repairs of the superstructure and piles on the JFK Memorial Bridge (39.315156°-74.528436°) over Risley Channel, at mile 1.1, Borough of Longport, NJ. The bridge will be under repair using occasional barges, snooper cranes and safety netting restricting access and reducing vertical clearance to 20 feet for half of the horizontal clearance of the channel (50 feet) from March 1, 2013 through November 30, 2013. The remaining portion of the navigable channel shall remain open to vessels with a horizontal clearance of 50 and vertical clearance of 25 feet. (5th District LNM Week 03/2013)
Mariners are advised to take caution when approaching the construction site for the repairs of the superstructure and piles on the Route 9, Garden State Parkway bridge over Great Egg Harbor and Drag Channel, Mile 3.5, (39.294539° -74.621566°) Somers Point, Atlantic County, NJ. The bridges continue to be under repair using occasional barges and snooper cranes through December 31, 2013. The navigable channel shall remain open to vessels until further notice. Mariners are advised that work continues at the Route 88 Bridge (40.083099° -74.066911°) in the Point Pleasant Canal in Point Pleasant, NJ. A barge will be on site with winch cables attached to the pilings on the west side of the canal. Work will continue for approximately 5 weeks. During this time the barge and winch cables will be obstructing part of the channel. Mariners are advised that work will be conducted at the Bridge Ave/RT 13 Bridge (40.071527° -74.060112°) in the Point Pleasant Canal in Point Pleasant, NJ. A barge will be on site partially blocking the navigable channel. Work will continue for approximately 5 weeks. During this time the barge will positioned against the bulkhead of the west side of the bridge, obstructing part of the channel. Mariners should use extreme caution when transiting the area. New NJ Bridges Proposed:
A proposal has been received by the Commander, Fifth Coast Guard District from Amy S. Greene Environmental Consultants on behalf of the New Jersey Turnpike Authority (NJTA) for the replacement of the existing southbound bridges carrying the Garden State Parkway (GSP) (39.293334° -74.622002°) over Great Egg Harbor Bay (GEHB) located in Upper Township, Cape May County and the Township of Egg Harbor and over Drag Channel (39.301716° -74.618763°) located in the City of Somers Point in Atlantic County, NJ. The new bridge over GEHB would increase the vertical clearance to 55 feet above mean high water (MHW) while maintaining the 148-foot horizontal clearance; and the new bridge over Drag Channel would increase the vertical clearance to 18 feet above MHW, with a greater horizontal clearance of 68 feet. In addition to replacing the southbound causeway, the project includes the demolition of the remaining portions of the Beesely’s Point Bridge (US Route 9 over GEHB and Drag Channel). The overall purpose of the project is to eliminate structural deficiencies and substandard geometry of the structures carrying the GSP Southbound over GEHB and Drag Channel while maintaining coastal evacuation needs and multi-modal travel. Christina River Dredging:
The Dredge LEXINGTON will be conducting dredging operations in the Christina River at the Wilmington Marine Center from 16 April until 15 May, 2013. The dredge will monitor VHF-FM channels 13 and 16. (5th District LNM Week 16/2013)
C&D Canal Bridge Construction:
NOTE: While the reduction of vertical and horizontal clearances at these bridges will not affect most pleasure vessels, mariners should be observant of construction equipment and activity in the vicinity. Mariners are advised that construction has been extended through November 30, 2013 at the Reedy Point (39.557731° -75.582637°) and Summit Bridges (39.540649° -75.738413°) over the C&D Canal, at miles 1.0 and 9.7, in Reedy Point and connecting the cities of Newark and Dover, in New Castle County DE, respectively. To facilitate construction at the Reedy Point Bridge, equipment has been installed on the south side channel reducing the available vertical clearance by approximately four feet to 131 feet, above MHW; and the horizontal clearance is reduced to 225 feet. The north side of the channel will remain open for vessel passage at normal operation elevation of 135 feet above MHW. Construction at the Summit Bridge has an air-draft restriction over the entire channel of 133 feet above MHW and the vessel master shall confirm their air draft requirements with the Army Corps dispatcher. New Reefballs for New Reef Site:
On or about May 10, Maryland Department of Natural Resources Chesapeake Shellfish Program and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation will be planting two hundred fifty (250) low –profile; two (2’) foot wide by one and one half (1-1/2’) foot tall, reefballs in the Memorial Stadium Sanctuary Reef site. The R/V PATRICIA CAMPBELL will be conducting the planting operation and will be monitoring channels 13, 16. The reef site is approximately 3.0 Nm. West of Tolchester Beach and 3.2 Nm. Bear Creek Bridge, Baltimore, Reduced Vertical Clearance:
Mariners are advised that bridge painting will be performed from April 18, 2013 through October 1, 2013 at the I-695 Bridge (39.236591° -76.498052°), at mile 1.3, across Bear Creek, between Broening Highway and Peninsula Expressway, MD. To facilitate the painting on the bridge a decking platform will reduce the available vertical clearance approximately to 52 feet, above MHW. A 200-foot spud barge will be used in navigable water; however, no work will interfere with navigation of the waterway. Mariners should use extreme caution when transiting the area. No Openings at Coleman Bridge 5 days in July:
Mariners are advised that the US 17/George P. Coleman Memorial Swing Bridge (37.240041° -76.507435°), at mile 7.0, at Yorktown, VA, will be closed to vessels requiring an opening from 7 a.m., on Monday, July 8, 2013, until 5 p.m., Friday, July 12, 2013, to perform electrical work. In the closed position to vessels, the available vertical clearance of the drawbridge is approximately 60 feet, above MHW. At all other times, the drawbridge will operate in accordance with the operating regulations set out in Title 33 Code of Federal Regulations Part 117.1025. Continued Work on Chesapeake Bay Bridges, Reduced Vertical Clearance:
Mariners are advised that bridge maintenance work (cleaning, painting and steel repairs) continues at the southbound sections of the US 13/North Channel Bridges (37.076364° -76.014265°)o ver Chesapeake Bay of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and Tunnel, between Cape Charles and Virginia Beach, VA. To facilitate the extended maintenance work, the available vertical clearances for the underside of the North Channel Bridges are reduced by three feet to approximately 72 feet above mean high water through May 31, 2013. Wallops Island Bridge, Reduced Vertical Clearance:
Mariners are advised that bridge repairs will be performed from June 1, 2013 through December 1, 2013 at the Wallops Island Bridge (37.850101° -75.490226°) across Cats Creek, at mile 1.0, Accomack County, VA. To facilitate the work on the bridge a decking platform will reduce the available vertical clearance approximately to 33 feet, above MHW. Turbidity Curtain for New Bridge Tunnel, Elizabeth River:

SKW Construction in association with the Mid Town Tunnel Project –Dredge Area 2T, will establish a yellow Turbidity Curtain; around the dredge area. This turbidity curtain will be held in place by thirty three (33) piles. Eleven (11) piles will be lighted with a four second flashing white light; Fl W 4s. A four hundred foot (400’) section of curtain will parallel the federal navigation project with Warning Lights D, E, F, G and H established approximately 100’ from the channel toe.

Norfolk Dredging will be conducting dredging operations in Deep Creek Yard (1 nm south of the I-64 bridge (36.757561° -76.296326°)) from 17 April until 05 May, 2013. Wrightsville Beach Bridge:
Mariners are advised that the S.R. 74 Bridge (34.216103° -77.812750°) at AIWW mile 283.1, at Wrightsville Beach, NC will be closed to navigation each night, from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m., on April 16, 2013 through March 1, 2014; except, vessel openings will be provided if at least two hours advance notice is given to the bridge tender at (910) 256-4519 or via marine radio on channel 13 VHF. At all other times, the drawbridge will operate in accordance with the regulations set out in Title 33 Code of Federal Regulations Part 117.821(a)(4). In addition, a containment system is positioned under the draw span until July 27, 2013 reducing the available vertical clearance to approximately 18 feet above MHW. Vessels that can pass under the drawbridge without an opening may do so at all times and the drawbridge will be able to open in an emergency. Bridge fender repairs will be in progress from December 20, 2012 until October 31, 2013 on the US 421 Fixed Bridge (Snows Cut) (34.055532° -77.899558°) at mile 295.6 on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Carolina Beach, North Carolina. To facilitate repairs a crane barge will reduce the available horizontal clearance in the navigable channel from 100 feet to 60 feet. A one hour advance notice is required to remove the barge from the channel for vessels requiring greater than 50 feet horizontal clearance to safely navigate through the bridge. The work supervisor can be contacted on VHF-FM channels 13 or 16 to arrange removal of the barge from the channel. Mariners are urged to transit the area with caution at slow no wake speeds. Mariners are advised that structural repairs will continue at the Snows Cut Bridge on US 421 at AIWW mile 295.7 (34.055532° -77.899558°) at Carolina Beach, NC through 5 p.m., on April 30, 2013. To facilitate repairs, a work platform will be installed and the available vertical clearance for the underside of the bridge will be temporarily reduced by four feet to 61 feet above mean high water. Oak Island Bridge:
1. Bridge fender repairs on the NC 133 Fixed Bridge (33.920022° -78.073379°) at mile 311.8 on the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway in Oak Island, North Carolina have been extended until June 15, 2013.
2. To facilitate repairs a crane barge will reduce the available horizontal clearance in the navigable channel from 90 feet to 50 feet. Equipment in AICW for Kure Beach Dredging:
Starting 26 March, 2013 and continuing until 20 May, 2013, WEEKS MARINE will have tugs, barges and floating pipeline along the east side of the AICW channel between New River-Cape Fear River Daybeacon 159 (LLNR 39750) (34-03-50.348N, 077-53-16.522W) and New River-Cape Fear River Buoy 155A (LLNR 39735). Equipment is in conjunction with the Carolina Beach/Kure Beach dredging/beach nourishment project. The tugs will monitor VHF-FM channels 13 and 16. A NO WAKE transit is requested of all vessels. Snows Cut Dredging:
The Dredge WILKO will be conducting dredging operations in the AICW at Snows Cut (34.056703°-77.894970°) from 19 February until 30 April, 2013. A floating and submerged pipeline will run along the AICW channel to the Carolina Beach Disposal Area. The dredge and assisting vessels MISS LEANNE and PROUD MARY will monitor VHF-FM channels 13 and 16. A NO WAKE transit is requested of all vessels passing the dredge and if necessary to clarify a SAFE PASSAGE contact the dredge on the appropriate VHF-FM channels. (5th District LNM Week 08/2013). NOTE: This is an extremely narrow cut with very strong current.
USCG First District
Coastal Waters from Eastport, Maine to Shrewsbury, New Jersey
Surveys in Maine Waters:
Alpine Ocean Seismic Survey Inc will be conducting geophysical survey and benthic sampling operations from approximately April 20th through July 10th 2013. These surveys will be conducted in three main areas:
1. One survey will be conducted along two predefined routes extending from the inner Boothbay harbor area out to three blocks approximately 22km offshore Maine.
2. A second survey area is situated between Isleboro and North Haven Islands (off the coast of Camden, Maine).
3. The third survey area is located between Vinalhaven and Matinicus islands.
Operations will be conducted from the RV Shearwater – a 110ft blue and white trimaran, which will be operating 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The vessels captain will monitor Channel 16. Geophysical survey equipment will be towed behind the vessel and maneuverability of the vessel will be restricted. Please note that some of the equipment will be towed subsurface at a distance of up to 1300ft behind the vessel, Mariners are advised to use caution when transiting near the survey vessel. Cape Cod Canal Update:
NOTE: The following information concerns much larger vessels than most pleasure craft, but in a restricted area such as a canal, we should all be aware of restrictions on the maneuverability of these large vessels and give them a wide berth. Effectively immediately the controlling depth of the Cape Cod Canal (41.761397° -70.569881°) is reduced to 30 feet MLLW due to sand shoaling that has developed in several locations. The locations of known shoal areas include: vicinity of canal station 455 at the eastern end of Hog Island Channel, vicinity of canal station 155 just west of the Sagamore Bridge, canal station 35 and canal station 05 at the east end breakwater. Vessels drawing greater than 24 feet should consult well in advance with the Marine Controller on duty. (First District LNM Week 16/2013)
The maximum air draft of the Cape Cod Canal is currently reduced from 135 feet to 130 feet. Air draft is reduced to 130 feet due to access staging installed on the Sagamore Bridge (41.774461° -70.544608°) for a painting project. An N-Star construction project to install new aerial electric cables across the Cape Cod Canal is scheduled for period April 15 – May 24, 2013. There may be temporary delays to marine traffic transiting in the canal. Contact the Canal’s Marine Traffic Control on VHF channel 13 for information on potential delays for specific days and times. Dredging, New Bedford, MA:
Dredging is being done northeast of the Route 6 Bridge and from Gifford Street Channel west of Palmer's Island (41.626299° -70.912345°) to east of the State Pier out to the Federal navigation Channel. The work will be done on or about 16 April, 2013 until approximately April 2014. The hours of operation will be 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. On scene will be dredges F. J. BELESIMO, BOBBY D & CAPTAIN A. J. FOURNIER, tugs EDNA, MISS YEVETTE & LUCINDA SMITH and scows EDDIE CARROLL, MIGHTY QUINN, SEI 2000 & JOE VERROCHI. All vessels will monitor VHF-FM channels 16, 13 & 67. Mariners are requested to transit at their slowest safe speed to minimize wake and proceed with caution after passing arrangements have been made. (First District LNM Week 14/2013)
NOAA Hydrographic Survey Operations:
NOAA Ship Thomas Jefferson (S222) will be conducting hydrographic survey operations throughout the area south of Long Beach and Hempstead Bay from approximately 20 March 2013 through 31 May 2013, from Gardiners Bay to Block Island from approximately 20 March 2013 through 31 May 2013, from Branford, CT to Greenport, NY from 20 March 2013 through 31 May 2013 and throughout Penobscot Bay, ME from 1 May 2013 through 31 July 2013.
Thomas Jefferson is a 208-foot, white survey vessel and deploys two 31-foot, aluminum survey launches; survey vessels carry NOAA markings, can be identified on AIS, and will be monitoring VHF channels 13 and 16. Survey operations will be conducted 24-hrs a day from the ship and from 0730 through 1800 with survey launches. Mariners are requested to exercise caution when transiting the operational area. When towed hydrographic instrumentation is deployed, Thomas Jefferson will be restricted in her ability to maneuver. An overview of the survey area is shown below. Marina Dredging, Old Saybrook, CT:

Tappan Zee Bridge Construction:
Trevcon Construction will be installing a 1,200’ x 45’ temporary trestle extending from the eastern shoreline north of the Tappan Zee Bridge (41.068388° -73.895171°). There will be six 100’ x 30’ finger piers extending from this trestle. Four crane barges will be on scene through Nov 29, 2013. Work hours are Mon-Fri, 0600-1700. (First District LNM Week 16/2013)
New Aid to Mark Shoaling at Sandy Hook:
The Coast Guard will be making the following changes to this waterway; Sandy Hook Lighted Shoal Buoy 11A (LLNR 35157): Establish in position approximate: 40-28-55.776N and 074-00-17.424W. Flash characteristic will be Fl G 4s. This aid with mark the north end of the shoal. (First District LNM Week 14/2013)
NJ Coast Wave Glider:
Liquid Robotics, Inc. will continue 24/7 autonomous, unmanned maritime vehicle (www.liquidr.com) operations from 4-Feb through 15-Jun-2013. Vehicle deployed 4-Feb-2013 in the vicinity of 40° 12.26' N , 70° 51.53' W to conduct scientific data collection operations. Operations consist of surveying this region and 39° 29.72' N, 71° 25.79' W for 2-3 week intervals making best speed while transitioning between them prior to recovery. Wave Glider is remotely operated, propelled under its own power, remotely attended from our Wave Glider Operations Center (WGOC), moving at speeds of ~1kt, and designed to "lose" should a conflict occur with any vessel. They are approximately 6.5' x 2' (surfboard size), black in color, with a contact plaque and mast extending 1 meter above the water surface supporting a flag. Mariners are advised to use caution when transiting the area.
