Gilmerton Bridge Restricted Opening:

From the USCG 5th District Bridge Branch, 9:00 a.m. August 20, 2010

VA - ATLANTIC INTRACOASTAL WATERWAY (AIWW) - ELIZABETH RIVER (SOUTHERN BRANCH) TO THE ALBERMARLE AND CHESAPEAKE CANAL
Mariners are advised that emergency electrical repairs are in progress through August 24, 2010 at the Gilmerton (US 13/460) Lift Bridge across the Elizabeth River (Southern Branch), at AIWW mile 5.8, in Chesapeake, VA. To facilitate repairs, the drawbridge will be allowed to open on signal for vessels requiring an opening every two hours from 12 a.m. (midnight) to 10 p.m. The drawbridge will continue to open on signal at any time for commercial vessels carrying liquefied flammable gas or other hazardous materials and for commercial cargo vessels, including tugs, and tugs with tows with at least two hours notice given to bridge operator at (757) 545-1512 or via marine radio on Channel 13. Mariners should adjust their transits accordingly and exercise caution when transiting the area.

This follows six days of closure of the bridge to vehicular traffic to repair what was reported to be an electrical problem. The local TV news reported last night that only one of the two motors used for opening the bridge is operational, which is the reason for the restriction. The damage was reported to have occurred during work on the bridge.
