Cruise to Newport, RI for the Boat Show

By John Jaeger - Published September 02, 2008 - Viewed 1459 times

As hurricane Hannah approaches the east coast, I and my hardy crew of three, prepare for our cruise from Gloucester Point, VA (near Yorktown) to Newport, RI for the boat show.  It should prove to be an exciting trip and will be our first time exhibiting for a boat manufacturer.

We purchased our Hylas 49 sailboat, "It's Only Money", on August 13, 2008.  Our maiden voyage from Ft. Lauderdale, where she was commissioned, to Gloucester Point, VA was interesting.  You know, they say that sail boating is 95% boredom and 5% terror.  I'd like to rephrase it to 95% patience and relaxation and 5% terror.  Although terror is probably a strong word, the first time one experiences a 42 knot wind gust and seas in the 8 to 10 ft. range (I promised I would not exaggerate) it is a little terrifying. This is particularly the case when you are down below and cannot really grasp what is going on. I will say, from the cockpit, it was exciting and not that scary.

So, this blog will be about our trip to the boat show and back and will also be a testament to “exhibiting" your boat for the manufacturer. Hylas has been an outstanding company to deal with so far and I expect nothing but the best sailing forward.

I’ll keep you posted.

Well good luck on your trip. Sailing during hurricane season is always an adventure... Especially when you don't know when a storm might pop up... Right now there's like 4 storms of the Atlantic coast??? WOW... Be safe and good look. I look forward to reading about how this trip went for you. -H
