Towing with a "Home Team" Advantage
Throughout our travels while taping our television program, we make a point of taping interviews with TowBoatUS captains operating on inland waterways across the country. The effort not only broadens BoatUS ANGLER awareness to our viewers, but offers TowBoatUS affiliated captains a bit of publicized and well-deserved gratitude. While attending the DEMA (Diving Equipment & Marketing Association) trade show in Orlando earlier this month, I scheduled some time to meet with TowBoatUS Captain Matt Moss in nearby Astor, Florida. Located on the St. Johns River four miles below Lake George, Matt and his crew cover a jurisdiction from Green Cove Springs to just south of Lake Monroe.
When Danny and I first arrived, we were somewhat bewildered as we were graciously greeted by Captain Matt and his lovely fiancé Captain Betsy. You see, Captain Matt and Captain Betsy direct the TowBoatUS operations from their meticulously landscaped, more than modest home overlooking the scenic St. Johns River. Needless to say, with a fleet of eight tow boats docked, ready for action right in front of their home, this is not what we would consider the norm for a towing and salvage operation.
One of the things that impressed me most was Captain Matt's attention to detail and "ship-shape" order. Each vessel, each piece of equipment was cared for with the same precise thoroughness as their entire home. Not only could you eat off the floor of their well organized garage, but you could probably use his tools as eating utensils. Get the picture?
When the real estate crunch hit a few years back, Matt decided it was time to retire from his then current occupation as a loan officer and opened St. Johns River Towing & Salvage. His love of the water, sense of adventure and the satisfaction acquired while helping someone in need steered him towards his newly-found profession. With one look around his home-based operation you can clearly see just how passionate he and Betsy are about the towing business and about each other as well.
Danny and I commend them for the service they provide to BoatUS ANGLER members and sincerely thank them for their cordial hospitality and for being there when the need arises on the water. To learn more about BoatU.S. ANGLER log onto www.BoatUSAngler.com
