Seaworthy Magazine: Highlights from the July 2008 Issue
Keeping Your Engine Humming Part 2, Diesels
Diesel engines have a reputation for longevity
and reliability, and for good reason. But a s
reliable as they are, ignoring them is the easiest
way to stop them cold. From the smallest single-cylinder
model to thousand-horsepower giants, diesels have
a few universal needs, that when met, will keep
them running for a long time.
Midsummer Maintenance
Breakdowns and
a lot of headaches can often be avoided with
a little preventive maintenance. The latter starts
by going over the boat’s
systems in the spring but after a few weekends
of hard use, it’s time for another look.
A midseason preventive maintenance checklist
will go a long way to avoiding unpleasant surprises.
The Technology of Hurricane Preparation
Marina Engineering and Design
After Hurricane
Ivan destroyed Mahogany Marina in September
2004, John Naybor was facing a mountain of
tough decisions, none more daunting than whether
to spend a considerable sum of money to make his
Pensacola, Florida facility much more “hurricane
resistant.” Ivan
had wiped out his business; the docks and pilings
were destroyed and most of the boats (43 out of
50) had been sunk.
Storm Anchoring: A Success Story
Our
Leopard 42 catamaran, Valiant Lady, safely rode
out three major hurricanes, Frances and Jeanne
in 2004 and Wilma in 2006, anchored in about
12 feet of water just off the Intracoastal Waterway
in North Palm Beach, Florida. Here’s what
we did.
Ever Felt Seasick?
Over the years, Seaworthy
editors have published a lot of sincere advice
on how to cope with seasickness: Take a pill,
watch the horizon, stay at the helm, don’t
look at a chart, breath deeply, sit under a tree,
etc. Here’s a
confession: With something like 112 years of
collective boating experience including 12 Bermuda
Races, one Fastnet Race, a trip from Alaska to
the Caribbean, bouncing around in the North Sea
for a week, etc.—not one of the Seaworthy
editors has ever been seasick. So, help us out.
