The domino theory: When one falls, they all fall. Over the long winter, boats will rock in the wind and gradually work the stands apart or into the ground if the legs are not properly supported. All jack stands under sailboats (and some powerboats) should therefore be chained together across the beam to keep the stands from working outward.
