ALEXANDRIA, Va., February 16, 2011 – Kent Barnekov, recently retired as President of Robinson Terminal Warehouse Company (a wholly-owned subsidiary of The Washington Post Company) has been named the new Executive Director of the Alexandria Seaport Foundation (ASF). He assumes the role effective March 1, 2011, when former ASF Executive Director Joe Youcha transitions to his new role as Director of ASF’s Building to Teach program.
Through the building and use of wooden boats, the Alexandria Seaport Foundation, located on the Potomac River in Alexandria, Virginia, helps at-risk youth turn their lives around and provides families, community groups and schools with meaningful educational, social and recreational experiences. Full-time apprentices earn their GEDs and prepare for a career in the building trades. The latest additions to the program include vocational training in green construction, a summer program and an after-school program.
Barnekov has been a member of the Seaport Foundation’s Board of Directors for six years and has most recently chaired the Development Committee. Starting as a press operator trainee at the age of 20, Barnekov’s career with the Washington Post Company spanned 35 years. During his time there he attended the Rochester Institute of Technology for newspaper production management. He brings to his new role strong fiscal management skills, an intimate knowledge of ASF’s mission and goals, and a passion for working with the community’s at-risk youth.
Donald Graham, Chairman of the Washington Post Company and a long-time supporter of ASF said, “Kent Barnekov has been a tremendous asset to the Washington Post and Robinson Terminal Warehouse Company. We will miss him but are pleased he will be working to grow and strengthen the Seaport’s programs.”
Joe Youcha, whose leadership and vision are the genesis of the Foundation’s successful Apprentice Program and other community outreach efforts, is pleased with the naming of Barnekov. “Kent is an excellent choice for the Foundation’s new Executive Director. We are fortunate that he will be leading us into the future and I look forward to working with him and the many dedicated volunteers as we continue and grow our programs. I will be focusing full time on the Building to Teach program I started two years ago,” said Youcha. “This is an exciting time for everyone at ASF.”
