Media Alert: ''Opening Day on the Bay'' Marks the Official
Start of San Francisco's 2009 Boating Season
WHEN: Sunday, April 26, 2009, starting at 12:00 Noon.
WHAT: “Opening Day on the Bay” is a parade of nearly 250 decorated boats that celebrates the official beginning of a new boating season on San Francisco Bay. The theme of this year’s Opening Day is “Legends of the Sea.” Viewers can expect to see famous pirates, sea serpents, Greek gods and creatures from deep under the sea aboard the parade of both power and sail boats competing for best decoration honors. Fireboats, historic work boats, Vessel Assist towboats, classic and contemporary craft also participate. The occasion will be a unique opportunity to see these special boats, all at the same time, sailing close to shore where land-based spectators can enjoy the event from Crissy Field to Pier 39.
WHERE: Free public viewing is available on San Francisco’s Northern Shoreline from Crissy Field to Pier 39.
WHO: Organized by the Pacific Inter-Club Yacht Association (PICYA) and sponsored for the last eight years by Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) .
HOW: Members of the media are invited to cover the event from a press boat which departs at 11:20 A.M. from Treasure Isle Marina at 1 Clipper Cove Way on Treasure Island. The boat will be on the water for about an hour and will move throughout the parade route, providing excellent photo opportunities. Contact PICYA Press Boat Coordinator Manny Mier at 415-383-5632 for boarding information.
