24-Hour TowBoatUS Service Comes to Toledo Bend Lake on the Texas-Louisiana Border

MANY, LA, September 19, 2016 -- When anglers and boaters on Toledo Bend Lake learned that TowBoatUS was on a neighboring lake helping boaters get safely home after a breakdown, they let it be known that they could use some assistance, too. James Small, who opened TowBoatUS Sam Rayburn, Texas, this spring heard the call and has now opened TowBoatUS Toledo Bend, his second 24-hour on-water towing and assistance service for recreational boaters.
The 65-mile-long manmade waterway spans the Texas-Louisiana border and is dubbed the nation’s number-one bass-fishing lake by Bassmaster Magazine, but Toledo Bend is also popular with all kinds of recreational boaters. However, lake conditions are “sometimes challenging,” says Small. Waves build quickly and bounce off the shoreline even in moderate winds. “It can be a bad place to have a breakdown.” In addition, the northern part of the lake is filled with tree stumps, forcing boaters to stay in marked lanes. They get into trouble when they stray from the channel while chasing fish and damage running gear.
Now if anglers or boaters run aground, have a mechanical breakdown or need a battery jump, Small and his team of qualified captains will be there to assist day or night, seven days a week. Much like an auto club for boaters, TowBoatUS offers an on-water Unlimited Towing Membership Plan for freshwater boaters and anglers for just $72 a year that includes BoatUS membership. There are no deductibles. Boaters face costs that average $700 per towing incident – with some paying into the thousands out of pocket – when they don’t have an annual BoatUS towing plan.
Small, a retired US Air Force veteran began working in the boating business when he and a son started a small company detailing and repairing outboards. Opening a TowBoatUS business was a logical next step, as many customers also voiced the need for an on-water towing service. Once TowBoatUS Sam Rayburn was going, Small started getting calls asking for help from game wardens and sheriffs working on Toledo Bend Lake, just a few miles away. While TowBoatUS is not an emergency service provider, Small’s ability to be on-scene quickly to provide boat towing and salvage services were an asset for local law enforcement and boaters.
TowBoatUS Toledo Bend keeps its assist boat, a 22-foot Mako with a 250-hp Johnson outboard on a trailer at Big Bass Marina in Many, Louisiana. Toledo Bend Lake is so large, that Small says he can provide a faster response when he trailers and splashes the bright-red response vessel at the nearest boat ramp. On the sides the boat’s high-sided hull are the TowBoatUS name and logo emblazoned in white. The vessel is fully rigged for towing and salvage, with powerful pumps, battery jump packs, dive gear and extra fuel.
Boaters can reach TowBoatUS Toledo Bend by hailing on VHF channel 16, calling the company directly at 936-715-8748, using the free BoatUS Smartphone App which instantly texts breakdown location and boat information to the BoatUS 24/7 Dispatch Center, or by calling 800-391-4869.
